What is the difference between Direct Connect and Bluetooth Smart Light Bulbs?
Direct Connect Light Bulbs connect to the Cync app via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth which allows for local and out-of-home control. It also allows you to connect your light (after setting up in the Cync app) to Alexa or Google Home for voice control without the need for an additional hub.
Bluetooth Light Bulbs connect to the Cync app via Bluetooth which allows for local control. If you want to control them out-of-home or with Alexa and Google voice assistants, you will need to add a Cync or C by GE Wi-Fi device to the same app Home as your Bluetooth lights. Wi-Fi devices include Direct Connect Lights, Smart Plugs, and Wired Switches.
Do I need Wi-Fi/internet to control Cync and C by GE Smart Light Bulbs?
If you purchased Direct Connect Light Bulbs, you will need Wi-Fi/internet because they connect to the Cync app via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Although you can still control your Direct Connect Light Bulbs without an internet connection, setting up a Wi-Fi connection is part of initial setup in the Cync app.
If you purchased Bluetooth Light Bulbs, you don't need Wi-Fi/internet because they connect to the Cync app via Bluetooth. If you want to control them out-of-home or with Alexa and Google voice assistants, you will need to add a Cync or C by GE Wi-Fi device in the same app Home as your Bluetooth light bulbs. Wi-Fi devices include the Direct Connect Light Bulbs, Smart Plug, Wired Switches or C-Reach.
If you purchased Outdoor Light Bulbs, it is recommended that there are 3+ bars on the Wi-Fi icon on your phone at the place you plan to install your bulb. If the signal strength is low at the point of installation, try commissioning the bulb inside, closer to the router. Once the bulb has been placed in its permanent location and commissioned the Cync app will display a Wi-Fi indicator sign next to the product to show current signal strength.
What is a Reveal Smart Light Bulb?
Reveal Smart Bulbs use advanced technology that produce distinct color contrast, providing high definition light that is perfect for detailed tasks and creating beautiful spaces. Reveal Smart Bulbs can be purchased in Soft White or Full Color.
What is a Dynamic Effects Smart Bulb?
Dynamic Effects Smart Bulbs are a new line of Cync lights with segmented sections that are able to display up to four colors at the same time. You can play preset Light Shows or customize your own. These products also include sound recognition technology so you can have your lights sync to your music! They are available in General Purpose (A19) and Indoor Floodlight (BR30).
Do Direct Connect Smart Light Bulbs work with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands?
Cync Direct Connect Light Bulbs only work with 2.4 GHz but is compatible with most routers that combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into a single network.
Can I use Cync Smart Light Bulbs outside?
Only the PAR38 Outdoor Bulbs are suitable for outdoor use. All other Cync Smart Light Bulbs are not recommended to be used outdoors and must be protected against the elements.
What fixtures are compatible with Smart Light Bulbs?
They are compatible with standard, medium base lamps or fixtures. However, they are not compatible with dimmers. To dim Cync Smart Light Bulbs you can use the Cync app or pair with a Cync Smart Dimmer Switch.
It is not recommended to use Outdoor Light Bulbs in dusk to dawn, motion sensing, or scheduling fixtures. While installation is possible, these fixtures will override the Cync app capabilities and limit the smart features of the bulb. Dusk to dawn fixtures may also cause the bulb to flicker.
Can I use the Smart Light Bulbs in enclosed fixtures?
We do not recommend using Cync Smart Light Bulbs in enclosed fixtures. The electronic components could fail early due to overheating.
Do the Smart Light Bulbs work in three-way lamps?
They can be used in these lamps, but they will not have the three-way dimming functionality. However, you can dim them with the Cync app or with a Cync Smart Dimmer Switch.
Will the Smart Light Bulbs get hot when used?
Yes, they can get hot when used which is normal. Always be cautious when handling any bulb.
Can I control the Smart Light Bulbs when I'm not home?
Yes, you can control your Smart Light Bulbs out-of-home. However, the setup will depend on which Cync or C by GE smart light you purchased.
If you purchased Direct Connect Light Bulbs, you can control them out-of-home without the need for an additional hub.
If you purchased Bluetooth Light Bulbs, you can control them out-of-home, but you will need a Cync or C by GE Wi-Fi device to enable this smart feature. Wi-Fi devices include the Direct Connect Lights, Smart Plugs, and Wired Switches.
Are the Smart Light Bulbs compatible outside of the US and Canada?
Currently, Cync and C by GE Smart Light Bulbs are only available in the US and Canada.
Is there a limit to the number of Smart Light Bulbs I can connect to the Cync app?
We recommend no more than 50 Cync or C by GE smart devices in one app Home.
Are Cync Bulbs compatible with Non-Cync Smart Switches or Mechanical Dimming Switches?
No. Cync Bulbs are only compatible with Cync Smart Switches and Standard On/Off Light Switches.

Can I control Smart Light Bulbs with the Google Assistant?
Yes, you can control Cync Smart Light Bulbs with Google Assistant. However, the setup will depend on which Cync or C by GE Smart Light Bulb purchased and which app is being used.

Using the Google Home app only:
- Both Direct Connect Lights and Bluetooth Lights can be paired directly to the Google Home app using a compatible Google Assistant smart speaker, which does not require using the Cync app. Google Seamless Set Up instructions.
Do I need a hub to connect to a Google Assistant?
No additional hub is required to connect Cync Smart Light Bulbs to a Google Assistant.
If I'm setting up my Cync or C by GE lights directly to the Google Home app (Made For Google), which Google Assistants are compatible with these lights?
Cync or C by GE light bulbs are compatible with first party Google devices such as:
- Google Mini
- Google Home
- Google Home Max
- Google Nest Hub
Can I connect my Smart Light Bulbs directly to Google Home without the Cync app?
You can set up Smart Light Bulbs with the Google Home app without the need of the Cync app by using Google Seamless Setup.
How far can my Google Assistant be from the Smart Light Bulbs to work?
As long as your Google Assistant is connected to the home's Wi-Fi, your Smart Light Bulbs with work.
Can I control my Smart Light Bulbs from anywhere in the house with a Google Assistant?
Yes, as long as there is an available Google Assistant paired with the Smart Light Bulbs, you will have control.
How many Smart Light Bulbs can be connected to my Google Assistant through the Cync app?
You can connect up to 50 smart devices per Google Assistant.
Can I create groups in Google Home?
You cannot create special groups in Google Home. However, you can create rooms and devices within those rooms. New devices will automatically group into their respective device type categories. Note that you will not be able to split these out from other lighting devices within that room.
Can I add Smart Light Bulbs to Google Home Routines?
Yes, Smart Light Bulbs are compatible with Google Home Routines.
Alexa FAQs
Can I control Cync Smart Light Bulbs with Alexa?
Yes, you can control your Smart Light Bulbs with Alexa. However, the setup will depend on which Cync or C by GE smart light you purchased.
If you purchased Direct Connect Light Bulbs, you can control them with Alexa with Frustration Free Setup or Works with Alexa. Review these instructions to enable Alexa to determine which setup method is best for you and your devices.
If you purchased Bluetooth Light Bulbs, you can control them with Alexa, but you will need a Cync Wi-Fi device to enable this smart feature. Wi-Fi devices include the Direct Connect Lights, Smart Plugs, Wired Switches, and C-Reach. First, pair your lights and Cync or C by GE Wi-Fi device to the Cync app, then follow these instructions to enable Alexa.
Do I need a hub to connect to Alexa
No additional hub is required to connect Cync Smart Light Bulbs to Alexa
Can I control the Smart Light Bulbs using an Echo product?
Yes, the Echo Show (All Generations), Echo (2nd Generation and newer), Echo Dot (2nd Generation and newer) and Echo Studio are all compatible.
Can I add my Smart Light Bulbs to Routines and Groups when connecting directly to Alexa?
No. You will have to connect your Smart Light Bulbs to the Cync app before pairing with Alexa.
