General Wafer Downlight FAQs



What is a Cync Wafer Downlight?

Cync Wafer Downlights are a smart lighting option that provide enhanced control, scheduling and millions of vibrant colors in tight spaces without a hub or recessed metal housing required. They install directly to line voltage using a remote transformer for easy set up.



How do you fit a Wafer Downlight?

See Installing Wafer Downlights for information on fitting Wafer Downlights.



Are there recessed can lighting options of the Cync Wafer Downlights?

No, we currently only offer the Cync Wafer Downlights, which are canless.



Do I need Wi-Fi/internet to control Wafer Downlights?

Yes, you will need Wi-Fi/internet because they connect to the Cync app via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Although you can still control your Wafer Downlights without an internet connection, setting up a Wi-Fi connection is part of initial setup in the Cync app.



Do I need an electrician to install these in my home?

Installation requires knowledge of luminaire electrical systems. If you're unsure, contact an electrician.



Do Cync Wafer Downlights work with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands?

Cync Wafer Downlights only work with 2.4 GHz but is compatible with most routers that combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into a single network.



Can I install Cync Wafer Downlights outside?

Cync Wafer Downlights are rated for wet environments and can be installed outdoors with up to 88% non-condensing humidity.



Can I use these downlights in enclosed fixtures?

We do not recommend using Cync Wafer Downlights in enclosed fixtures. The electronic components could fail early due to overheating.



Can I control these lights when I’m not home?

Yes, you can control your Cync Wafer Downlight away from home, no hub or bridge needed required. Simply pair your Wafer Downlights to the Cync app.



Are these lights compatible outside of the US and Canada?

Currently, Cync Wafer Downlights are only available in the US and Canada.



Is there a limit to the number of lights I can connect to the Cync app?

We recommend no more than 50 Cync smart devices in one app Home.



Can I link the Cync Wafer Downlights to voice assistants?

Yes, you can set up your lights with Google Voice Assistant and Alexa.



Can I control Cync Wafer Downlights with motion sensors?

Yes, Cync Wafer Downlights are compatible with Cync Wire-Free Motion Sensors.



How do I remove a Wafer Downlight?

Carefully pull the wafer downlight from the trim until you see the two spring clips. Push both of the spring clips inwards and gently pull the fixture out of the ceiling, keeping pressure on the clips. Once the wafer is removed from the ceiling, slowly release pressure off of the spring clips. Failure to slowly release the spring clips may result in them snapping back on your fingers.



Can I use the my existing electrical box that is already in my ceiling for Cync Wafer Downlights?

Cync strongly recommends only using the electrical box provided with the Cync Wafer Downlight.



Can a single Cync Wire-Free Smart Switch with Color Control be used to dim or control multiple Cync Wafer Downlights simultaneously?

Yes. To control multiple Cync Wafer Downlights simultaneously, simply add the desired lights to a single group. For more information please see the Room and Group Control article.



Is the junction box required to be mounted on a solid surface or can it sit loosely in the ceiling?

The junction box is not required to be mounted.






Google Home FAQs



Do I need a hub to connect to a Google Assistant?

No additional hub is required to connect Cync Wafer Downlights to a Google Assistant.



Can I connect my downlights directly to Google Home without the Cync App?

Yes, your Cync Wafer Downlights can be set up with Google Seamless Setup without the use of the Cync app. Alternatively, you may pair your Cync devices with the Cync app first, then link your Google account. See our Google article for information on using your Cync products with Google.



How far can my Google Assistant be from the Wafers to work?

As long as your Google Assistant is connected to the home's Wi-Fi, your Wafer Downlights will work.



Can I control my wafers from anywhere in the house with Google Assistant?

Yes, as long as there is an available Google Assistant paired with the Wafer Downlights, you will have control.



How many Wafers can be connected to my Google Assistant through the Cync app?

You can connect up to 50 smart devices per Google Voice Assistant.



Can I create groups in Google Home?

You cannot create special groups in Google Home. However, you can create rooms and devices within those rooms. New devices will automatically group in to their respective device type categories. Note that you will not be able to split these out from other lighting devices within that room.



Can I add Wafer Downlights to Google Home Routines?

Yes, Wafer Downlights are compatible with Google Home Routines.






Alexa FAQs



Do I need a hub to connect to Alexa?

No additional hub is required to connect Cync Wafer Downlights to Alexa.



Can I control the Wafers using an Echo product?

Yes, the Echo Show (All Generations), Echo (2nd Generation and newer), Echo Dot (2nd Generation and newer) and Echo Studio are all compatible.



Can I add my wafers to Routines and Groups when connecting directly to Alexa?

No. You will have to connect your Wafer Downlights to the Cync app before pairing with Alexa.
