Indoor and Outdoor Plug FAQs

Can I control the Cync Indoor and Outdoor Smart Plugs with Bluetooth and not Wi-Fi?

You do need a Wi-Fi connection to set up your smart plugs with the Cync app. When you are in the same location as your plug, the Cync app will connect to your plug through Bluetooth. When you are away from home, your app requires an internet connection through Wi-Fi or Cellular Data to communicate with the plug.

Do Cync or C by GE Smart Plugs work with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands?

Our Indoor and Outdoor Smart Plugs only work with 2.4 GHz but are compatible with most networks that combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into a single network.

Which Cync and C by GE devices does the smart plug work with?

Our indoor and outdoor smart plugs are compatible with all Cync devices. However, it is not recommended to plug a Cync Light Strip or Cync Bulb powered by a lamp directly into a Cync Smart Plug, as when the plug is turned off the light will not be powered and lose control from the Cync app.

Our Smart Plugs also enable voice and out-of-home control for our Cync and C by GE Bluetooth lights by simply assigning your smart plug to the same app Home as your Bluetooth lights. For voice control, you will need to link your Cync account with Alexa and/or Google.

Can I connect these Indoor and Outdoor Smart Plugs with other non-Cync smart home lights or devices?

No, our smart plugs only work with other Cync or C by GE devices.

If the power goes out, will the Indoor and Outdoor Smart Plugs default to off?

Your devices will default to OFF after the power is restored.

Can I control these plugs when I’m away from home?

Yes, our smart plugs are Wi-Fi enabled. You can control them from out-of-home without the need of hub or additional device. Just use the Cync app.

Can I control these plugs with Alexa, Google and HomeKit?

Our plugs are compatible with Alexa and Google. For HomeKit, please see our Matter-Compatible Plugs.

Because our smart plug is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, you can control it with Alexa and Google without the need of a hub or additional device.

For Alexa control, you may link your Cync account to your Alexa app or pair the device using Frustration Free Setup. Click here for more information about controlling and pairing plugs with Alexa.

For Google control, if you are using the Cync app, you will need to link your Cync account to the Google Home app. If you are only using the Google Home app, you can connect the Plug directly to the Google Home app.

Why is my plug showing as a light bulb in the Google Home app?

The Google Home app will identify what kind of device your plug is controlling based on the plug’s name in the app.

For example, if you’ve named your plug “Lamp,” because your plug is controlling a lamp, the Google Home app will identify it as a light. If you do not have a lighting-oriented name for the plug, then it will appear as a plug in the Google Home app. You can also change the name of the device after initial setup in the Google Home app, which could change whether Google Home shows it as a plug or a light.

Can I dim lights through the smart plug?

No, you can only turn devices, including lights, on and off with the smart plug.

Do the Cync Indoor and Outdoor Smart Plugs work with Smartthings?

Our smart plugs are not compatible with Smartthings. For Smartthings integration, please see our Matter-Compatible Smart Plugs.

Are these plugs a bridge for Bluetooth only products like Cync or C by GE Bluetooth light bulbs and strips, which enables voice and out-of-home control?

Yes, our plugs have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection capabilities. This allows you to connect your Cync or C by GE Bluetooth Smart devices to Alexa and Google, in addition to enabling out-of-home control.

How many Cync or C by GE Bluetooth lights can I connect to one smart plug for Alexa, Google and out-of-home control?

We recommend no more than 50 devices in one Cync app Home. Therefore, you can have one Cync/C by GE plug and 49 Cync/C by GE devices in one Cync app Home.
